Just for the record (and the archive, should anyone else need this 
info), that solved it.  Both 3.1-R and 3.2-R have no problems with 
the AEC-4412.  It was just something in 2.2.x that couldn't deal 
with it.

The only question remaining is...  How best to partition a 68GB 
array...  :)
