Nothing like posting to a public mailing list to make you reevaluate! I noticed that since "chip1" (the infrared controller) is now being recognized at irq 11 I should use irq 10 for pcic. I did that and now things seem to be working fine. I'm thinking that what was happening was that after a while the infrared controller suddenly saw a signal, produced an interrupt, and screwed the "an" driver.
