Many thanks to all responders.

It was just my paranoia -- I had read the man pages. Well,
I watched cdrao messages while it was working on audio stuff, but I was 
misled into thinking, erm, I was afraid it might be performing some sort 
of "high-level" action instead of a raw mode copy. Also, I should have 
tested it more.
