It doesn't matter that your hardware configuration didn't change; components age and go bad on their own. For example, I recently had a Pentium Pro system suddenly start panicking the kernel in impossible places (integer divide faults in code involving no integer division, etc) which turned out to be a clogged CPU fan. I replaced the fan and it's been fine ever since.
