Greg,

DOH!  Thanks for reminding me that I needed to ./MAKEDEV snd0 (which 
made audio0, dsp0, midi0, mixer0, etc.).  After I did that, XMMS 
worked perfectly.  BTW, I'm using the default IRQ of 10, since 5 is 
used by my modem card:

   device          pcm0 at isa? irq 10 drq 1 flags 0x0

I'd prefer more danged volume, but the problem's probably these $2 headphones.
