Your doing it right. It's probably some hardware issue. I've set up parallel port printers on FreeBSD on a number of machines in the past. About 20% of them had some problem with the parallel port in the computer to where it would not print. It used to not be a problem because time was that the parallel port was on a card that you could unplug and replace if the port acted up. Today they all seem to be on the motherboards and replacing the parallel port is not possible. I finally got so disgusted that I gave it up and now I use HP JetDirect print servers which can be had for a few bucks on Ebay, and connect them to the FreeBSD systems via Ethernet.
