Ann,

My detailed knowledge is limited, but I believe the ports system uses
tarballs. The ports system has the advantage of also including scripts
which automate the downloading, unbundling and installation of the tarballs
so that you can worry about more important details, like starting to use the
software.

If you really enjoy pain: have a look in the /usr/ports directory to find
the 'Makefile' for the port you want, see where they go to fetch the
tarballs, and then you could go fetch them yourself manually.

Me? - I like the easy way :)

PS: I used the ports collection to get php4 with Postgres support earlier
this week - it's going like a Boeing now! The standard PHP4 port includes
mySQL support, so you could actually use the package which is available on
CD or by FTP from '/stand/sysinstall'. This is even easier than ports as
the downloaded tarball contains pre-compiled goodies, and it installs
everything for you too.

Patrick.

Dear all

I would like to install apache, mod_ssl, mysql and php
from tarball instead of ports

Could I do that way? any conflict?
what versions of the aforesaid package do you suggest?

In fact, what is the different between ports and
tarball

Thanks
