K, I recompiled the kernel and installed xmms.  I'm playing a mp3 and
I'm not hearing anything.  Ideas here?

You aren't going to get anywhere without recompiling your kernel to 
statically link in the device drivers or by loading their KLD
counterparts 
dynamically.  There is a section in the FreeBSD handbook on both 
compiling a kernel and configuring sound on FreeBSD.

IIRC those are Linux drivers.
