Yeah, there are commercial *mild* abrasives you can buy that are supposedly made especially for CDs, but toothpaste is certainly in the Open Source (in this case, an opened tube - or do you use the pump?) spirit. Of course you'll likely just ruin it anyway, and then your son can demonstrate his home science project. (Tit for tat: Around Easter time, when they start selling Peeps - y'know, those sugar-marshmallowy chick things? - put one in the microwave for about 20 seconds and it becomes The Chicken that Ate New York.
