I have succesfully used birda to sync my palm using coldsync(8) and a Actisys serial IrDA dongle. My suggestion is to take birda as a starting point and netgraph'y it. That way we will also be able to use the various IrDA chipsets around. I have already available a netgraph driver for the toshiba oboe chipset.
