yes

posting your smb.conf file would be helpful , as would mentioning which 
version of samba you are running. istr 2.2.1 is a minimum for xp / win2k sp2. 
Mentioning what procedures you have so far performed would help.
smbpasswd -a  some_users springs to mind.

yes, but this is default, are you using encrypted passwords?
