hmmm, Murray, I have obtained similar results when the entites were either incorrectly defined at the head of article.sgml, or if the DTD's were not installed, I remember that after putting my docs in /usr/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/ I had no problems here.

I may be incorrect, but it seems that make(1) cannot find the dtd it needs.
