That's true. I've tried to overwrite this in /etc/pccard.conf by
replacing the "?" with 3, the irq assigned to the card under a previous
installation of Debian GNU/Linux. But it seems as this only makes thinks
more obscure. So I've reverted to the defaults in
/etc/defaults/pccard.conf.

Back to the default this behaviour vanishes. But unfortunately pccardd
still says "driver allocation failed for Xircom(CreditCard 10/100).
Device not configured".
