Yes. This is a perenniel problem. The firmware is very large. But in order to
make things work reasonably, you really need to often load recent f/w.

I've suggested a 3rd floppy before so you could have things like ispfw.ko on
it, but basically didn't know enough to be able

Huh. That's damned odd. See below for more what you *ought* to see. It's a
2200, but the same things should be seen.

It *might* be hung up on running an ABOUT FIRMWARE command.

Oh- here's another thing. Do you have the BIOS disabled for the QLogic
card? If so, turn it *on* (via the Alt-Q menu). That might do the trick.

If you're already installed, shouldn't you be able to just load ispfw.ko from
/modules (which *should* be there)?
