Indeed, lots of Linux distros out there had acquired Debian packaging system for its robustness, convenience, and reliability. Heck, Mandrake was RPM based until recently, same does apply to SuSE and Russian ALT Linux AFAIK. People tend to drop RPM in favor of apt-based package repository and tools, which is, at least, a good indication of that Debian packaging system is something quite worth looking into.
