EMFBI, but I'll add my experience with 4.6-Release and the same VIA onboard soundcard. If the kernel contains options PNPBIOS device pcm the soundcard is detected but is non-functional. I tried to kldload the snd_via82c686.ko module, but no joy (probably because pcm was already in the kernel). loading the module from /boot/loader.conf worked, but still no sound . I got tired of fooling with it and installed a cheap soundblaster. And yes, the VIA chip works in Win2K. FWIW Mandrake 8.2 couldn't detect the VIA sound chip at all. Go figure.
