Right.  A DOS partition and a FAT partition are two different names for the 
same thing.

But disklabel shouldn't be trying to work with a FAT partition; that's very 
odd.  But I'm wondering if your FreeBSD partition is a primary partition.  It 
must be for FreeBSD to install properly; it cannot be a logical partition in 
an extended partition.  You will then subdivide that primary partition with 
the disklabel editor.

I hope that this helps; I admit to not completely understanding how your 
problem came about.
