Yes. This is a symptom of not using the ports system. If you do this:
cd /usr/ports/graphics/png
make install
you will be pleasantly suprised. Of course, if you like to struggle
with recalcitrant software, and you like redoing the fixes that have
been contributed to the ports system by a large number of people
over the years, then by all means ignore the ports system.
