A strange bug had been reported with aspell-0.50.1: Cf.
"libaspell-common-0.50.1.so erroneously closes stdin/stdout/stderr" at
<URL:http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/aspell-user/2002-September/000056.html>.

It has been fixed in aspell-0.50.2, with some other bugs. Could you
please grab it from
<URL:http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=43472>;
and let us know if it solves your problem?
