Why do you think so? I don't really think the lads at mplayerHQ knows much about how ports works? Eg. mplayer supports xvid and I've installed it through ports, but the mplayer config-scripts apparently doesn't recognise it. Question is, am I doing something wrong, or doesn't the ports-version of mplayer support this?
