I have VMware working with a GeForce2 adapter (and a GeForce2 Go adapter) just fine. I'm also using the new native NVidia drivers, though the XFree86 4 drivers also work. Make sure you're not selecting the full-screen mode. It's documented as a no-no anyway. If you're using the native NV drivers, there might be an issue with the GeForce 4 and VMware. If you'd like to use the XFree86 drivers with your card, checkout http://www.marcuscom.com/g2g-xfree86/article.html.
