I found the answer in a comment to Bugzilla Bug 198862:

   "Under preferences/Advanced->Keyboard Navigation:
   Is "Find as You Type" enabled?
   If yes: Does the bug happen if you disable it?"

Disabling "Find as You Type" solved my problem.
