I vote for the switch as long as it doesn't affect that pacemaker software
I wrote a while back:

cat /dev/heartrate |
	awk '{if ($1<70 || $1>200) system("/usr/local/sbin/defibrillate");}'

More people count on awk than anyone realizes...
