No, the configure script does not make it easy to disable Python support. Python with expat is needed for the libglade-convert script (which arguably is not needed for a user install). If you wanted, you could remove the Python dependency from the Makefile, and remove bin/libglade-convert from pkg-plist. Of course, if you wanted to submit a nice patch that conditionalizes Python support, that would be appreciated, too.
