Ok, some short addendum: had a short time with a HP DL 585 
(quad-Opteron, amd64) to play, the 7170 was recognized without problems.
The only drawback on that machine ist, that 5.3R needs long time to 
load, but that could have been caused by the 2 FC-cards in that baby 
(you will need to load explicitly acpi and firmware kernel modules for 
fc-cards)
