Sorry; I wasn't clear. vfs.usermount=1 is set in /etc/sysctl.conf... I was not aware that this was tunable in loader.conf. Thanks for your help. -- I don't care what you think. That, and we seem to have a teensy problem lifting ourselves off the ground.
