Hi Scott/Thomas, I bought a Pioneer DVR-112D IDE DVD-RW drive to see if the timeouts were specific to my Sony DRU-800A, but I had no luck with it, either. In fact, it wouldn't even work with a disc in the drive as the Sony does. It times out on INQUIRY (dmesg attached below). I'm hoping this is a valid data point for this issue - it definitely seems to point towards something that's not drive dependent. Although I was hoping it'd act the same way as the Sony.
