Not quite true. deb http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free restricted That's a very useful, and needed, repo, that is not an official part of Debian. If you use any 3Ware devices, you need that repo. There's a bunch of other, binary-only, doesn't follow the social contract, software in there that is very useful on a server.
