Thw "bad comment" I was referring to was a markup comment:
<!-- this is an HTML comment -->
My blunder was
<!-- this is an HTML comment --!>
It wiped out a lot of stuff that firefox displayed correctly,
possibly talking the EOL as the close-of-comment. ...Sometimes I
wonder about myself!
