I ran it again, diff pid:

no, it varies widely.

yes, I kill dd on the target, and the dump shows:

  DUMP: dumping (Pass IV) [regular files]
Terminated
  DUMP: Broken pipe
  DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
