It's working again on the notebook. I wound up rebooting the notebook

Not that I *really* know how to interpret what I'm seeing, but it
looked sorta kinda reasonable. Mouse clicks were obviously interpreted
correctly. When I moved the mouse, something that looked like it might
be coordinates changed.

This yielded '/dev/ums0 usb sysmouse generic'

Something is different between the notebook and the server. One thing
is that I adopted the hald/dbus-free Xorg configuration suggested for
my hypersensitive touchpad problems. So I suppose it could be that
hald doesn't handle the mouse properly.
