I had some difficalties too , I spend 48h to make 2.2.6stable + CAM working with DEll and aic-7890. I had 'cannot mount root' message too - but I run disklabel and changed disktype from ESDI -> SCSI (boot tried to mount wd0s2). Now it mounts da0s2a. About 2-3 week system runs without problems.
