The windowmanager can be started in different ways depending on whether you are using xdm or are starting X 'manually' using startx. In the latter case you put the appropriate invocation into your .xinitrc (if it doesn't exist, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc is take - copy it into your HOME directory).
