You're leaving out important things, like:

1.  What version of FreeBSD you're running.
2.  /etc/rc.conf or /etc/sysconfig contents.
3.  Any relevant log messages.

Check /etc/rc.conf or /etc/sysconfig, make sure that the hostname is set.
