Some old BIOSes checked specifically for DOS signature, and if not found
they proudly announced they couldn't find any OS on the disk.

I don't remember the final conclusion, but this problem has been solved on
freebsd-small. I.e. the reason was found - I don't remember any soplution,
that is ... ;-)
