Did you by any chance install a kerberized version of su? I've had this problem with su trying unsuccessfully to communicate with a KerberosIV server. Eventually, su times out. If you can confirm that su does time out with Kerberos-related messages in /var/log/messages, the solution is to ``make world'' with MAKE_KERBEROS4 undefined. This means commenting it out of /etc/make.conf . If not, I'm wasting your time and you should wait for someone else to make suggestions. :-) Ciao, Sheldon.
