Doesn't the old "config; cd; make dep all install" sequence work?
It's just that you are meant to be silent and try the official
way when things don't work this way. It they do -- enjoy!

I thought buildworld is only needed before buildkernel. But to
make sure (and to get the philosophy as well as all the
advantages and downsides) make sure to check the archive -- the
threads were quite numerous and long.

Then don't update your sources. :) Nobody told you to take all
the hassle if you only want to comple your kernel after adjusting
GENERIC's copy to your needs.
