You say it yourself:
> man ifconfig and man ed don't mention anything about the media directive

Which means that "media" is an "Invalid Argument". NE2000 cards are
either hard-wired or auto configure the media type.
Try just:
# ifconfig ed0 192.168.0.200 255.255.255.0 up
