My apologies. My mind apparently skipped over the reference to packages in your first e-mail. Unfortunately, if the packages are built with the gnome dependencies, I'm not sure there's much you can do. You *might* be able to get away with just not using the gconf backend and not using gtk-window-decorator, and then uninstalling the gnome packages, but pkgdb and portupgrade will complain about the missing dependencies every time you use them.
