Off the cuff, my theory would be: Did your DNS server become inaccessible because of the router failuer? I believe smbd (like most good daemons) does a reverse lookup on every request that comes in (to log - so spoofing can be detected) and therefore, any problem accessing the DNS server would cause massive delays in network services.
