Yeah, the fbdevhw thing is what is supposed to allow VT switching. In 
general, if you have a graphics driver that needs it and turn it off, 
you can't go back to the text console. The exception is if you use 
xf86-video-scfb, which is unaccelerated but uses the kernel framebuffer.
