I've filed PR's with a patch for this issue now to most of the affected 
operating systems.  It's basically anything derived from 4.4BSDLite 
that hasn't already corrected for this issue.

OpenBSD: no reply, I'll refile later this evening.
DragonflyBSD: sent mail

I've done some testing against the FreeBSD-STABLE and -CURRENT flavors 
of this patch and it seems to (a) fix the problem behavior described 
earlier in this thread (b) have no detrimental effect to the rest of 
the system.
