I had a similiar problem with one of my machines. From searching the freebsd-questions mailing list archives I found that FreeBSD was not recognizing the exact geometry of my hard disk. I took the cheap way out and dedicated the entire disk to FreeBSD using the A option of FreeBSD 2.1.
