For example could an application written in VB6 be > stored and run from a BSD box. Yes, I do something similar myself. You can use Samba to export a FreeBSD filesystem to Windows clients. The clients can then run programs stored on the FreeBSD machine. Note that you'll need to have the appropriate DLLs installed on the clients (vbrunxxx for example).
