Spoke to soon... It copes with the traffic now (I ran test after test), but 
the idle box just locked up hours later (no console output, no panic, 
nothing).

I've disconnected 're1' again (as before) to see if that stops it locking 
up.

There were no watchdog timeout errors logged at all for the time it had 
been up.
