Thanks, guys! Both alternatives work, but I prefer gkrellm-leds to gai-leds since the latter glues itself to the top left corner of the screen and has smaller active areas, which makes it harder to spot. gkrellm-leds needs to be configured with the correct --libdir option and the generated object renamed from .so.0.0 to .so.
