There was one gotcha with the controller and ZFS, I think it is documented in a bug report or archives somewhere, but below are my notes from that particular issue. If the problem shows, you need to boot a Live CD and remember how you named the pool. I think I also found that by assigning the second volume (da1) as boot drive it worked as well.
