Hmm, I like the book `The Design Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System' by McKusick et al. (Addison-Wesley 1996). Furhermore, there is /usr/share/doc/smm/05.fastfs/paper.ascii.gz in the FreeBSD distribution. Have you already read it?
