What kind of ethernet cards do you have? What version of FreeBSD are the boot floppies from? I have installed from the releng4 server many times without a problem. I have used Intel EtherExpress Pro and Linksys cards (fxp and dc drivers). Anyway you can get a hold of a verbose boot log?
