THe first question, of course, is which Thinkpad?  For the A2X 
series, I've got instructions at www.personal.psu.edu/reh18 (uhh,
I forget the rest, but there's a link).  You no longer need to
apply the referenced patch, though.  There's even a configured
kernel file :)

remember to shut of pci power saving in the bios.
